Most "SEO company in Patna" pages are the same page with the city name swapped in. This one isn't, because we pulled the keyword data for this market before deciding to publish anything. Here is what it says — including the parts that argue against hiring an agency at all.
Patna has one hard keyword. Everything else is soft.
We clustered 23,548 India SEO keywords across five exports. Patna came out at 42 keywords and about 1,430 searches a month. Five of those carry a difficulty score, and they read like this: "seo company in patna" at 590 searches and KD 18; "best seo company in patna" at 260 and KD 9; "seo services in patna" at 210 and KD 9; "seo agency in patna" at 110 and KD 8; "seo experts in patna" at 110 and KD 8.
The head term is twice the difficulty of everything below it, and the gap is the whole story of this market. It is not a hard market by national standards — the equivalent term is 40 in Mumbai, 39 in Delhi and 86 in Noida. But inside Patna there is a clear step, and where you put your first ninety days depends entirely on which side of it you start.
The easy terms out-search the trophy term, 690 to 590
This is the finding that should change your proposal. Add up the four KD 8–9 terms — 260 plus 210 plus 110 plus 110 — and you get 690 searches a month. The head term is 590. The soft layer is the bigger opportunity, and it is available at roughly half the difficulty.
Almost every Patna pitch we have seen inverts this. It names the head term, promises page one on it, and then spends two quarters building authority towards a single page while four cheaper, larger opportunities sit untouched. Sequence it the other way and you get enquiries in month two or three instead of month six — and the links, reviews and topical depth you earn along the way are exactly what the head term needed anyway. Nothing is skipped. It just stops being first.
Ninety per cent of the city sits in five queries
Those five scored terms hold 1,280 of Patna's 1,430 monthly searches — about 90% of all demand in the city. The other 37 keywords are the long tail of a small market: state-name variants, brand names, near-duplicates, and a lot of zero-volume phrasings.
The practical consequence is that this is not a content-calendar market. Five pages built properly, a Google Business Profile that actually works, and a steady review flow will cover nearly everything available. If an agency proposes forty articles a quarter for Patna, they are selling you volume because volume is easy to invoice — not because the data asked for it. In a market this concentrated, depth on five pages beats breadth on fifty every time.
The "best SEO company" layer is unusually large — and unusually winnable
We normally tell clients to stop chasing "best" and "top 10" queries. In Kolkata that layer is 24% of demand and owned by directories; in Mumbai it is 17% and the same story. You cannot rank your own site in someone else's listicle, and pretending otherwise is one of the tells we list in our guide to judging an SEO agency in India.
Patna is the clearest exception we have mapped. The best/top/list layer here is 17 keywords and about 300 searches a month — a fifth of the entire cluster — and its main term, "best seo company in patna" at 260 searches, scores difficulty 9. That is softer than the head term by nine points. Several of the tail queries in that layer still point at free blog platforms, which is a fair signal of how thin the incumbent content is. So here we do build the comparison and proof page, and we verify the live SERP in the audit first, because "best" queries are exactly where listicles like to hide.
Four of five SERPs show sitelinks — structure is being rewarded
A detail worth more than it looks: four of Patna's five scored results carry sitelinks, and all five carry a local pack. Sitelinks are Google's way of saying it understands a site well enough to surface its internal pages, and a four-page brochure site does not earn them. The incumbents here are not necessarily doing great SEO, but they do have real architecture.
So technical work and internal structure are not back-office hygiene in this market — they change how your result is displayed, which changes your click-through rate before ranking position has anything to say about it. Clean hierarchy, sensible internal linking, correct schema, fast pages. It is unglamorous and it is most of the gap.
No AI Overviews yet — which makes the answer layer cheap, not optional
Not one Patna term in our data returns a Google AI Overview. Compare that with 43% of demand in Mumbai, 33% in Noida and 22% in Hyderabad. It would be easy to read that as permission to ignore AI search here. We read it the other way.
Three of the five scored terms already return a People Also Ask block — the same extraction problem in an older wrapper. If your content is written so a machine can lift a clean answer out of it, you win the PAA boxes now and you are already positioned when AI answers reach this market, which on the pattern we are watching elsewhere is a matter of when. Doing answer engine optimisation and entity work in a market at zero AI footprint costs a fraction of retrofitting it after the fact. That is the entire argument, and we are not going to inflate it beyond that.
Nobody is bidding, which tells you what you are up against
Three of the five scored Patna terms record no cost-per-click at all — including the 260-search "best" term and both KD 8 terms. Only the head term ($0.46) and "seo services in patna" ($0.39) carry any advertiser bid. For context, Bangalore averages $1.53 and Mumbai $1.18.
Cheap or absent bidding in a commercial category usually means few serious competitors, which tends to track with thin organic effort too. The honest flip side is twofold. First, 1,430 searches a month is a small pool, so a retainer has to pay for itself out of fewer enquiries — which is why conversion work is part of the programme rather than an upsell. Second, with almost no ad inventory on these terms, you cannot run a cheap Google Ads test to validate demand the way you can in Mumbai. You commit on the data or you do not commit.
This is a clean buyer market, and it searches in English
Two honest positives. First, there is almost no contamination in the volume. Exactly one keyword in the 42 carries job or experience phrasing, and it records zero searches; exactly one is price-led, and it also records zero. Compare that with Hyderabad, where learner and job-seeker demand forced us to discount the headline number. Patna's 1,430 is close to pure hiring intent, which means the forecast needs no haircut.
Second, every keyword in this cluster is typed in English — including all five commercial terms. People who speak Hindi, Bhojpuri or Magahi all day still search "seo services in patna" in English when they are hiring someone. So you do not need a Hindi website to win these queries. You need clean English service pages, and Hindi where the actual conversation happens: Profile posts and Q&A, review replies, WhatsApp, and the phone call. Ten of the 42 keywords append "Bihar" too — buyers qualify by state here in a way they do not in Pune or Kochi — so one page and one Profile should serve the city and the state together, not as two thin pages.
Which Patna businesses this page is actually for
Patna is a state capital, which means its economy is institutions and trade. Hospitals, diagnostics chains and clinics. One of India's densest coaching and test-prep markets. Lawyers, chartered accountants and consultants. Builders and real-estate firms — there is literally a "real estate seo company in patna" query sitting in this cluster. Jewellers, apparel and electronics retail. And the wholesale and distribution trade that supplies the rest of Bihar.
Those businesses want the local pack, reviews and service pages this page describes. But some of Patna is not local at all: Bihar's makhana, litchi, rice and mango brands now ship across India and online, and they need ecommerce SEO rather than a city page. Firms selling services to businesses nationally need B2B SEO, software companies need SaaS SEO, and anyone who mainly wants senior strategy rather than execution should just work with a senior SEO consultant directly. The first job of the audit is to tell you which of those you are, and to stop you paying for the wrong one.
A realistic first six months
Because four of five terms are genuinely soft, honest timelines here are shorter than in a metro — but they are still timelines. Profile and review work usually shows movement inside 30 to 45 days. The KD 8–9 service pages typically start ranking in month two or three. The head term at KD 18 is realistically a month four-to-seven conversation, and it depends on the authority you start with. There will be a flat month somewhere in there; there always is.
One last Patna-specific note. Five keywords in this cluster are agency brand names — people searching a specific firm directly, plus a handful hunting for "seo companies in patna" lists on blog platforms. That tells you exactly how this market buys: shortlist, then verify. Which means your reviews, your named team and a site that survives a careful reader matter as much here as ranking does.
