Search "SEO company in Mumbai" and you'll find agencies with a dozen city pages each, all written from the same template, all claiming a local office. It's the most common play in Indian SEO and it's mostly theatre. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing where your SEO gets done — written by the people who'd rather you asked hard questions than took our word for it.
Proximity almost never affects rankings
Google doesn't know or care where your agency sits. What it evaluates is your site: whether it can be crawled and understood, whether the content answers the query better than the alternatives, whether other credible sources reference you, and — for local queries — whether your Business Profile and location signals are consistent and active. None of that requires anyone to be in the same city as you. We've ranked brands in thirteen countries without a single office outside India.
The real exceptions are narrow and physical: someone photographing your premises, collecting in-person reviews, or attending a local event for genuine coverage. Those are worth doing, they're a small fraction of the work, and they're easy to arrange without a permanent local office. If an agency tells you geography is the deciding factor, ask them which specific ranking signal they mean.
What does change by city is the competition and the intent mix
This is the part that genuinely matters, and it's the reason our city pages exist. From our keyword research across 23,548 India SEO keywords, Mumbai carries roughly 28,980 searches a month at a median difficulty of 23. Kolkata carries 12,210 at a difficulty of 18. Noida carries 8,790 at 14. Those aren't trivia — they change what a realistic first six months looks like, how much content you need to publish, and whether the fastest route to revenue is head terms or long-tail.
The intent mix shifts too. A Bangalore SaaS company's buyers are searching problem-led queries and comparison terms, often from outside the city entirely — a "Bangalore" page is nearly irrelevant to their actual pipeline. A Prayagraj clinic's buyers are searching "near me" on a phone with location services on, and the map pack decides the outcome before organic results are even seen. Same agency, same principles, entirely different first ninety days.
Why we won't publish a page for every city in India
We could generate two hundred city pages this afternoon. We won't, because Google has spent years specifically demoting that pattern, and because a page that offers nothing beyond a find-and-replace of the city name is a liability on your domain rather than an asset. Our internal rule is that a page ships only if it clears four gates: real search demand behind it, an intent distinct from a page we already have, at least seven hundred words of genuinely market-specific content, and a clear commercial next step. Everything else stays a navigation link — like most of the cities on this page today.
That's also why the cards above are honest about what's live and what's in build. The alternative — publishing eight thin pages this week so the grid looks complete — would work against the exact thing you're paying us to protect.
The questions that separate a real local programme from a template
When you talk to any agency about your city, ask them what the median keyword difficulty is in your market and where they got the number. Ask which of your competitors currently owns the map pack and why. Ask what proportion of your target queries trigger an AI Overview today, because that changes how much traffic a number-one ranking is actually worth. Ask who specifically will do the work and whether you can see their previous results. If the answers are generic, the strategy will be too. We wrote the full list of eight questions precisely so you can use them on us.
Where we actually are
SERP EDGE started in Prayagraj and that's still our home base — it's the one city where we meet clients face to face by appointment, and where our local SEO programme is documented in full, down to the Business Profile method we use. We keep a second base in Mumbai. Everything else is remote-first, which is not a compromise but the reason a senior team can work on your account at all instead of an office junior in your postcode.
If you want to know how your specific market looks before committing to anything, ask us for a free audit. You'll get the competition picture, the realistic timeline and a prioritised action list for your city — and if we think you'd be better served by someone else, we'll say that too.
