The answer has to survive being taken out of the page
This is the single edit that wins most snippets. An answer engine doesn't quote your page — it quotes one passage from it. If that passage says “as we mentioned above” or leans on the paragraph before it, it can't be lifted. We write every target answer to stand completely on its own: name the subject, answer in 40–55 words, no pronouns pointing backwards. Then the depth goes underneath, where it earns the click from the people who want more.
Match the format the query is already rewarding
Look at what currently occupies the box before writing. “What is” and “why” questions get paragraph snippets. “How to” and “steps” get ordered lists. Comparison and pricing queries get tables surprisingly often. Answering a list-shaped query with a paragraph is the most common reason a technically better page loses to a thinner one — the format is part of the answer.
Schema is a claim, and it has to be true
Roughly half the sites we audit have FAQ markup that doesn't match anything a visitor can see, usually from a plugin someone switched on years ago. That's a broken claim to the engine, and it costs trust across the whole domain, not just that page. We rebuild schema per template, tie every marked-up question to visible copy, validate it, and then request a re-crawl. It's tedious and it's the part most agencies skip. There's a fuller walkthrough in our guide on how FAQ schema gets you cited by AI.
Engines cite entities they can verify
Answer surfaces name brands, not URLs. If your company name, founder, address and credentials tell a consistent story across your site, your LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile and everywhere else you appear, an engine can confidently attribute an answer to you. If those signals contradict each other, it quietly picks a source it can verify instead. Entity clean-up is unglamorous work that changes citation rates more than another 2,000-word blog post ever will.
Zero-click isn't a loss if the answer has your name on it
We're honest with clients about this: winning the snippet can reduce clicks on that query. What it buys you is being the brand the buyer read at the moment they were deciding, and much better-qualified clicks from the people who do come through. In client dashboards the pattern is consistent — answer-owning pages give up some impressions-to-clicks ratio and convert far better than they did in position three.
AEO and GEO are different jobs on the same foundation
AEO is about the answer inside a search result. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is about being recommended inside ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini where there is no result page at all. The underlying work overlaps — structure, schema, entities, genuine authority — but the targets and the measurement differ. We explain the split properly in GEO vs SEO vs AEO and in how to get cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
AEO belongs inside a working SEO programme, not beside it — see the full SEO services we run it within, or work directly with our SEO consultant in India if you want the strategy and your team executes.
